VESSELS and VASES - group 2
COPPER REDS AND BLUES
Copper reds and blues are produced in a reduction atmosphere in the kiln by starving the kiln of oxygen. This turns the copper particles within the glazes red. The copper blues form with the addition of silicon carbide to the glaze which causes a very violent melt phase, the thin areas reoxidise in the cooling causing the coppers to turn blue. The feathuring on some of the red glazes is produced by extremely heavy reduction of the kiln in the middle part of the firing.
