CRYSTALLINE GLAZE

I have been using crystalline glazes for 20 years, they are relatively simple glazes to produce however the real art is in producing crystalline glazes of superior quality and interest.
I have several crystalline glazes in use that are unique to this studio.
The crystalline effect is produced by firing a glaze rich in zinc and silica to 1300¢ªC and then putting the glaze through a very slow cooling cycle. The glazes are held at temperature of between 1000 C and 1140 C for periods of 2 - 6 hours.
The temperature is sometimes moved up and down in this temperature band to create ringing effects within the crystals.
The crystals form spontaneously and at random within the glaze surface during this soaking period.
The matt crystal glazes are produced by adding a second crystallizing agent which form a micro crystal along with macro crystal of zinc.
Colours are produced using metal oxides, Titanium for whites, Copper for greens, Cobalt for blues and Iron for yellows.
